My Role In The Occupy Movement

I’ve been thinking about my role in the Occupy movement lately. I guess I would call myself a videographer and cop watcher. Other people would call me a citizen journalist. I don’t live stream my footage. I record, then go through my footage and post it on YouTube, sometimes even here.

The main thing that has made me think of my role, is that there’s been a lot of infighting at Occupy Oakland, especially toward citizen journalists. The great thing about citizen journalists, is that they aren’t controlled by anyone. Mainstream Media is told what to report, and how to report. They’re controlled by the 1%. Citizen journalists show truth. When the police get violent, most of the time the mainstream media has disappeared. Citizen journalists are still there, on the front line streaming and/or documenting.

We’re here to show the truth. We’re here to document police brutality. We’re here to show the world that the Occupy Movement is not just a bunch of violent punk kids. We want to showmthe world that the movement is fighting for everyone’s rights. We’re not the enemy.

I have met a huge amount of amazing people through the movement. People who share my passion of human rights, and of our Constitutional rights.

I’m going to continue documenting the movement. The truth needs to be shown to the world.

We are the 99%.
